PA06-8 Hume and the Enlightenment.
  Taylor, Craig/ 9781848930841

While Hume remains one of the most central figures in modern philosophy his place within Enlightenment thinking is much less clearly defined. Although historically an Enlightenment figure, this identity is often missed due to misunderstandings of both his philosophy and of the movement itself. Taking recent work on Hume as a starting point, this volume of original essays aims to re-examine and clarify Hume's influence on the thought and values of the Enlightenment. There are many books on Hume¡¦s philosophy, but few that deal with his influence on Enlightenment thinking and ideas more generally. Indeed, while Hume is now widely regarded as one of the most significant of British philosophers, he was in his day also counted as a weighty essayist and historian. Further, the influences of Hume's empiricism stretch from encouraging the exploration of sentiment in literature to being a forerunner to the new discipline of cognitive science. This volume is a valuable resource to students and researchers seeking to establish what it is that counts as Enlightenment thinking, and whether Hume should really be regarded as a philosopher of the Enlightenment world.

VA06-177 Dictionary of Eighteenth-Century German Philosophers, 3-Vols/Set.
  Klemme, Heiner F./ 9780826418623

This monumental work features the most important German philosophers, jurists, pedagogues, literary critics, doctors, historians, and others whose work has philosophical significance who lived and wrote in the eighteenth century, covering the period between 1701 and 1801. The Dictionary includes work by philosophers whose mother tongue was German, were published in German or who lived in Germany for an extended period of time. Since historic borders are different from today's, the Dictionary includes authors born or who lived in places such as Strasbourg, Danzig, Koenisberg, or Austria. Swiss philosophers are also covered. These philosophers published in German, Latin, French, and Hebrew. Since German philosophy cannot be understood without the influence of French and English philosophers, the work also includes translators and editors. Each entry aims to give the reader insight into the philosophers' life and contribution to the world of thought. Bibliographical references will help with further research. The entries include a biographical sketch, analysis of doctrines with emphasis on historical context, subsequent influences, and bibliography of further works and secondary literature.
VA06-175 Confucian Studies, 4-Vols/Set.
  Yao, Xinzhong/ 9780415452151

To some extent Confucianism can be broadly said to have started with the teaching of Confucius (551-479BC) who focused on how to restore moral and political order through education and ritual performance, although he did not see himself as the founder of a new moment, nor did he elaborate a systematic religious or philosophical doctrine. Several centuries after his death, he was elevated to the position of the Perfect Sage and Ancient Teacher (zhisheng xianshi), and gradually became one of the focuses in state sacrifices. In this way Confucianism became part of the state religion or ideology addressing the needs of government, community, family, and the self, and dominated intellectual and social life for more than 2,000 years in China, and, to a lesser extent, in other parts of East Asia. While having substantially declined in political and social influence, Confucianism was revived by leading intellectuals (so-called Modern New Confucians) in the twentieth century to deal with perennial problems facing modern people and society. It is against this background that Confucian Studies has become an increasingly important subject taught in universities and colleges in North America, Europe, East Asia, and Australia. With more and more universities and colleges offering courses on or relating to Confucian philosophy, ethics, religion, and politics, this new collection from Routledge answers the urgent need for a source book in contemporary Confucian Studies. Volume I ('Reassessing Confucian Traditions') covers Confucianism in History and the focus of Volume II is on 'Reinterpreting Confucian Ideas'. Volume III is titled 'Reconstructing Confucian Ethics', while the final volume in the collection brings the best scholarship on 'Reappraising Confucian Ideals'.
VA06-147 Biographical Encyclopedia of British Idealism.
  Sweet, William/ 9780826418654

This is a unique and significant new reference work which reflects the shifting intellectual boundaries of British Thought between 1860 and 1920. Often regarded as an aberrant phase in the history of late nineteenth and early twentieth-century philosophy, British Idealism provoked a wide range of attacks and replies from all the major figures of the time, such as Sidgwick, Dewey, Broad and of course Russell. Some of the major figures who were associated with the movements were Bosanquet, F.H. Bradley, Edward Caird, Collingwood, T.H. Green, Hobhouse, McTaggart, Muirhead, Ritchie and and Stirling. Earlier idealists such as the Cambridge Platonists, Coleridge, Carlyle and Ferrier amongst others, are also included as are important later contributors such as Oakeshott. Non-British thinkers who made important contributions to the traditions and discussion such as Blanshard, Croce, Dewey, William James, Peirce, Royce and Santayana also have entries. In recent years there has been a considerable amount of renewed interest and many of the ideas of that tradition are being reintroduced and discussed in philosophy and politics.
PA06-7 Montesquieu and England: Enlightened Exchanges, 1689-1755.
  Gonthier, Ursula Haskins/ 9781851969975

Gonthier sets Montesquieu¡¦s work in the context of early eighteenth-century Anglo¡VFrench relations. She takes a comparative approach to show how Montesquieu¡¦s engagement with English thought and writing persisted throughout his writing career. He was particularly influenced by the social and political theories of Hobbes and Locke, the writings of the Earl of Shaftesbury, Francis Hutcheson, and essays that appeared in Addison and Steele¡¦s Spectator and Bolingbroke¡¦s Craftsman. Gonthier argues that Montesquieu¡¦s work is a site of intellectual and cultural exchange between England and France during the early Enlightenment.

VA06-174 Richard Rorty, 4-Vols/Set.
  Tartaglia, James/ 9780415490047

Richard Rorty (1931¡V2007) remains one of the contemporary world¡¦s most influential thinkers. He has been a major figure in philosophy ever since the publication of his first important paper, ¡¥Mind-Body Identity, Privacy, and Categories¡¦ in 1965, but it was the release of his seminal Philosophy and the Mirror of Nature (1979) that caused the literature on his work to expand exponentially, a process which has accelerated since his death in 2007; scores of new articles and books about Rorty appear every year, and even his biography has proved to be an academic bestseller. Rorty¡¦s enduring appeal has a number of sources. One is the scope and urgency of his views, for he was never shy about presenting his call for the abandonment of objective truth against the grand backdrop of the cultural progress of the West. Another is that his views were highly controversial, and yet could not be easily dismissed, since Rorty was able to claim with some plausibility that he was simply drawing out the consequences of positions developed by his more conventionally respectable peers. And another is that Rorty applied his views to a wide range of topical concerns outside of academic philosophy. For these and many other reasons, philosophers to this day line up to refute him, students read Rorty before the philosophers he discusses, and non-philosophy academics produce a continuous stream of articles applying his views to their own interests. The first of the four volumes (¡¥Mind, Language, and Truth¡¦) Volume II (¡¥Metaphilosophy and Pragmatism¡¦) Volume III (¡¥Philosophers¡¦) Volume IV (¡¥Themes¡¦)
VA06-173 Philosophy of Mind, 4-Vols/Set.
  Crawford, Sean/ 9780415471916

Philosophy of Mind is concerned with fundamental issues about the relation between mind and body and mind and world, and with the nature of the diverse variety of mental phenomena, such as thought, self-knowledge, consciousness, perception, sensation, and emotion. Philosophers of mind explore some of the most perplexing questions about our mental lives. For instance: * How exactly is the mental related to the physical? * How is it that our thoughts can reach out to reality and refer to objects distant in time and space? * What is consciousness? Can it be explained by science? * How is thought related to language? * Can animals think? * Is there some one thing, some special property, that all mental phenomena share that distinguishes them from non-mental phenomena? * To what extent has the computer helped us to understand the nature of mind? * Does emotion play a larger role in our rationality that has previously been thought? For as long as humanity has sought an understanding of its place in the universe, philosophy of mind has been at the centre of philosophy, but it flourishes now as it has never done before. This new title in the Routledge¡¦s Major Works series, Critical Concepts in Philosophy, meets the need for an authoritative reference work to make sense of the subject¡¦s enormous literature and the continuing explosion in research output. Edited by Sean Crawford, a prominent scholar in the field, it is a four-volume collection of classic and contemporary contributions to all of the major debates in philosophy of mind. With comprehensive introductions to each volume, newly written by the editor, which place the collected material in its historical and intellectual context, Philosophy of Mind is an essential work of reference and is destined to be valued by philosophers of mind¡Xas well as those working in allied areas such as metaphysics, epistemology, and philosophy of language; and cognate disciplines such as psychology¡Xas a vital research tool.
